Mineola, Texas

Mineola TX Real Estate, Mineola area and Community Information

Mineola, Texas is a community with about 4,800 inhabitants about an hour-and-a-half east of Dallas. The town is situated in the southwestern corner of Wood County to the north of Tyler. Mineola was named after the hometown of a prominent railroad official that worked in the area in the 1870s.

History

Mineola fully owed its early existence to the arrival of the railroads. In 1873, the Texas and Pacific Railroad arrived in town. It was recorded that a competitor, the International and Great Northern Railroad, arrived literally 15 minutes later. The Mineola post office opened in 1875, and the community was incorporated two years later. By 1890, over 2,000 people lived in this prosperous place where two rail lines intersected. A railroad terminal was built here in the 1920s. Not coincidentally, the timber found in the region was perfect for the making of railroad ties. Farmers in the area grew cotton, livestock, fruit and berries.

Parks and Recreation

The Mineola Nature Preserve covers more than 2,900 acres just to the south of town. This expansive nature preserve is said to be home to almost 200 different bird species. Hikers enjoy a trail routed over an historic 1880s-era railroad right-of-way. There are over 20 miles of horse trails, and fishermen can try their luck on multiple ponds. This facility along the Sabine River also includes a campground and primitive campsites.

Attractions and Activities

Avid anglers can pursue lunker bass at Lake Fork, only about 10 miles out of town. It is widely considered one of the best Largemouth Bass hotspots in all of Texas. In fact, a new state record bass was landed here in 2012. It weighed over 18 pounds.

Events

There are many community activities and events to keep Moneloa residents busy. Residents regularly enjoy the Main Street Farmers Market every Saturday as well as many other annual and semi annual events throughout the year.

What used to be Mineola May Days is now called JUNEbilee, thanks to its move to early June. The entrance fee is just a dollar, and kids under 10 get in free with a paying visitor. The weekend event includes a "Mineola's Got Talent" competition. Live music fills the weekend, and there's a popular motorcycle display.
